From Covid to Confidence Builder: Alison’s Journey as a CYZ Voluntine

Meet Alison, one of our incredible CYZ Voluntines who’s been supporting and inspiring our young people every week since 2022.  Read her story and discover how volunteering has changed her life.

Hi. My name is Alison and I’ve been volunteering at Senior Club for a couple of years. Before the pandemic I travelled a lot for my job. When the pandemic hit, I was on furlough for 22 months and, when I did return to work, I was permanently home based Very quickly, I realised I needed to get out of the house more, and wanted to do something that would give back to the local community. The application and training process was straightforward, and I felt fully supported along the way. It was clear from the outset that CYZ was going to be different from other places I’ve volunteered; CYZ wanted to get to know me as a person, my interests and what I wanted to get out of it as well as what I could offer them.

As a volunteer at CYZ I really feel part of the team and am treated in the same way as the paid members of staff. Volunteering has given me back the self-confidence that I lost during the pandemic – I’m now part of a local samba drumming band and I couldn’t have imagined doing that 2 years ago!  I continue to volunteer because, above all, it’s fun! It’s great to connect with the young people engaging in whatever activity I’m facilitating. I’m often found in the arts & crafts area, but I’ve also been known to help with baking, nail art, or badminton to name just a few of the activities that are regularly on offer – there really is something for everyone! If there is anyone out there considering volunteering then I would 100% recommend they consider CYZ. The team here will make sure you are well looked after.

You’ll learn, you’ll grow, but above all, you’ll have fun!
